In curator Marija Marcelionytė-Paliukė’s exhibition ‘Randasi’, past scars and present emergences come together. Ieva Babilaitė’s works are not fictional drawings, but a process that becomes an acoustic impulse within the body, memory, or the silence of the studio. The crumpling of paper, the scratching of an awl or graphite, and the echoes of the past are captured by the artist like a device that plots curves and encodes rhythm. The pieces are created using 4B, 6B, and 8B graphite pencils and ink. The first layer is etched into the paper with an awl as a physical barrier to line and thought; the second is coated with ink; the third with graphite, until the scar becomes visible. Here, the scar functions as a boundary, and the exhibition brings forth what emerges once that boundary is crossed—the image arrives ahead of thought. Ieva Babilaitė is an artist, illustrator, educator, curator, and an associate professor in the Printmaking Department at the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
