‘Zapping’ by Vytautas Buinevičius. This site-specific art installation utilises an obsolete piece of telecommunications infrastructure that is highly characteristic of this building’s facade, and of the neighbourhood in general—the satellite dish. Following the fall of the Iron Curtain, this was the first popular technology—a window into a globalising, multicultural world and the Western gaze, which filled (and continues to fill) the entirety of gentrified Naugarduko Street: from halal restaurants to international offices with typical architectural facade forms. Conversely, satellite broadcast channels have always contributed more to preserving local identity, such as the traditional Hindu culinary or Shiite religious channels broadcast via UK satellites, featuring extravagant studio decorations. Watching these broadcasts is an immersive experience. Satellite television becomes a way to slow down and build connections within the neighbourhood. For a long time, television was criticised as a disruptive technology, but in today’s social media landscape, it can be viewed as community-focused and even unifying.
