Group exhibition ‘Familiar Stranger‘

Address: Latako g. 3Opening 09.11 18:00

The exhibition opening party ‘Soft landing’ will take place on Friday 11 September from 21.00 at Draugų vardai (Konstitucijos pr. 12, Vilnius).

‘Familiar Stranger’ presents works by international artists Zuza Banasińska, Loora Kaubi, Sarah Neumann, and Milda Januševičiūtė, which reflect on memory as an unstable process that continuously reshapes personal and collective identities. The exhibition intertwines family histories, inherited imagery, bodily memory, and digital archives. The past reaches us in fragments: a story repeated by relatives, an image whose details no longer align, an inherited gesture, or a file stored somewhere in the cloud. Rather than a static archive, memory here is a constant negotiation between what is remembered, forgotten, replaced, and passed down. The exhibition reveals the shift between bodily and externalised memory. What was once preserved in stories, objects, and bodies increasingly exists on corporate servers, accessible through passwords and infrastructures we can barely see. Forgetting may be a fundamental condition of human existence; data storage has turned it into a service. Instead of treating memory as reliable testimony, ‘Familiar Stranger’ reflects on how remembrance is shaped by repetition, silences, technology, and the contemporary standpoint from which we look back. The familiar can return slightly altered; a stranger’s memory can seamlessly become one’s own; an inherited story can feel simultaneously intimate and strangely alien. The exhibition does not seek to reconstruct an original, pristine past. Instead, it considers how to live with what remains, what has been rewritten, and what we choose to remember—or allow external systems to remember for us.
