‘Fragile Home’ (curator – Aistė Kisarauskaitė).
The exhibition was inspired by the history of Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association, which is marked in broad strokes by moving from one temporary gallery to another.Established in the wake of restored Independence, the association inherited neither administrative buildings nor galleries. Yet, this nomadic, unhoused reality did not stop it from uniting contemporary artists—crucially, without bringing along the baggage of deep-seated historical problems. It seemed we were entering a bright era of continuous growth, yet today the threat of war looms once again. Images of rocket-struck high-rises and rapidly evolving weapons force us to reflect on the safety of our cities—or even scout for the nearest shelter. This reality revives the memory of ancestral estates destroyed by past occupations, history we thought we had left behind. However, the exhibition does not merely dwell on these undercurrents of anxiety; it also reveals contemporary shifts, from newly discovered homesteading experiences to rural sheep farming and enduring long country winters. Today’s concept of home easily accommodates the mobility, agility, and nomadic lifestyle of the modern individual, driven increasingly by conscious choice rather than sheer necessity. We are bound by tighter bonds to distant points across the globe, spaces that effortlessly become our second, or even primary, homes.
