Morta Jonynaitė’s solo exhibition ‘The Earth Speaks to the Sky’.
An exhibition of woven conversations and textile addresses by Morta Jonynaitė, in which the artist tells stories of intimate communication processes. Like an attentive anthropologist, Jonynaitė captures the memories of close ones and hearsay from far away, preventing deeply shared, archaic experiences—the desire to be together and to understand one another—from fading into oblivion. Translating these narratives into sculptural and textile objects, the artist uses them to talk about attempts to communicate across different generations, ideological regimes, linguistic registers, presence and absence, earth and sky. The evocative exhibition title contains a pre-verbal dance of the elements, one that has been unfolding for thousands of years without words or humans. What, then, does it mean within this exhibition and beyond it to be earth or sky, when words lose their value, and time is increasingly unappreciated—drawn out, rushed, or moved backwards and forwards? This exhibition is about the time required for communication, and the effort to find at least some common ground during challenging times.
